Battle of the Books Volusia

Volusia County Schools hosts the Battle of the Books, a quiz-bowl style reading competition for students, which was first introduced at the elementary level in 2023. This competition is based on the annual Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) list for elementary and middle schools. The competition promotes literacy and teamwork, with students reading books from the SSYRA list to prepare for the quiz-bowl format.

The 2025-2026 school year will have TWO Bobcats On the Run sessions, fall & spring! Our 3rd-5^th grade bobcats will be able to join us for both sessions and our K-2^nd grade bobcats will be able to join us for the spring session.

This club does have a $15 fee to cover the cost of the club shirt. We will have a parent meeting in early October for the fall session and in early January/February for the spring session. Be on the lookout for more details to be shared through our school ClassDojo and fliers brought home by your child.

Since 1986, the Florida Department of Education has provided assistance to schools in forming and maintaining chapters of Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA), a pre-collegiate and collegiate teacher recruitment program. The program provides a forum for students to become aware of career opportunities in education and nurtures their interest in teaching as a career. FFEA is administered through local school chapters at all grade levels - elementary through postsecondary.

Meetings will be held once or twice a month on Fridays from 2:45-3:30 pm. Meeting dates will be shared upon acceptance into the club.

If you are interested, the first step is to receive and complete the application/permission form. You can get the from your homeroom teacher, the front office or by stopping by Mrs. Kelley’s classroom, 2-14.

It must be filled out and returned to your homeroom teacher or Mrs. Kelley by Friday, September 12, 2025. Spaces are limited so don’t delay!

Choose troop S1367 to join the Friendship Elementary School troop. 

Meetings are typically twice a month, on early release days, for 2 hours (2:30 pm - 4:30 pm). We also have field trips outside of school, for those who are interested. Attending events & activities are at the discretion of the girl & her family.

The initial membership fee is currently $45 per girl & $30 for any adult members who may want to join. Each family is responsible for registering through the above website. Financial aid is an option, please email Mrs. Kelley for more information, if needed.

Students of Ms. Garcia, including former students, will be invited to join. Kindness Crew members are students who show compassion, empathy, and good character. Students who will inspire classmates and others to spread kindness throughout our school, community, and the world. As part of the Kindness Crew, we will make friends, learn about increasing kindness in our school, and learn about monthly kindness challenges.

Math Club will be meeting once a week for 9 weeks in the spring and will provide math enrichment to our highest learners in 4th grade through games, challenges and competition amongst the students. More details will follow as we get closer to spring.

The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) provides students in grades 4–6 a place to develop and apply their passion for service, while obtaining the skills to be confident young leaders for years to come.

NEHS membership is centered on recognizing students for their accomplishments while challenging and equipping them to develop further as leaders through service to their school and community.

The Bobcat News is prerecorded and can be viewed daily on our school’s YouTube channel.  The News Crew is responsible for creating and producing the weekly broadcast, which includes school news and announcements, real world information, and other schoolwide special occasions. They run the equipment, write the scripts, and gather news and announcements from around the school. There are two News Teams, one team is on during the first half of the school year and the second team is on during the second half of the school year.

News crew is open to 5^th grade. The ideal broadcast team member is responsible, a team player, articulate, able to complete tasks independently, and committed to arriving in the media center on time to prepare for the broadcast. The 5th graders will train the incoming news team during the second portion of the school year.

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) to our 4^th and 5^th grade students through fun, exciting hands-on learning. 

Participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program using LEGO® technology, helping today’s students, families, and educators build a better future together. 

FIRST LEGO League inspires youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills and showcase what they learned.
